Although The Spinners would famously come to define the lush, seductive sound of 'Philly' soul in the early 1970s, their roots lay in another hotbed of American soul music, namely Detroit. They had nurtured a sound that could have only been born from their education in doo-wop, pop and R&B throughout the '50s and '60s and so by the 1970s, their depth and range reached beyond anything that Berry Gordy could hope to produce.

Ex-Bootsy Collins man, Phillipe Wynne was the new vocal commander of a group that had faced virtual isolation from Motown and had been dropped from Gordy's roster by 1972. The Spinners performance here reaches far back into their celebrated past and whilst it may ignore their last two albums (Grand Slam, Labor Of Love), it brings out the very best of their 1970s output spanning the years 1972-1981.

It's a show that celebrates their immensity as vocal supremos and million sellers in disco and R&B. The engagement of rich, Detroit vocals with that Philly appeal is a marriage between style and grace that remains the hallmark sound of Detroit's Spinners.
